Online Forum by GETP & Emancipator

“International Solidarity Against Backlash; transforming masculinities as part of the solution”

* This forum provides simultaneous interpretation services between Korean and English.

1. The purpose of the program

(1) Korea is a country where various forms of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, occur frequently. In particular, the advantage of being an IT powerhouse is creating the ironic situation that facilitates digital sex crimes. The current Korean president and leading politicians continue to say, “There is no more structural gender discrimination in Korea,” and said they would abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family even submitted a full cut in the sexuality education budget for children and teenagers to the National Assembly. A strong backlash on this gender equality agenda was expressed by the media as if it were a “gender conflict” between men and women, and a series of campaigns were made to separate young men and women during the election process.

(2) Therefore, we GETP introduced the European IMAGINE Toolkit with gender trainers in Korea. Also published “Why Feminism is good for men” into Korean (Korean title_Men’s Liberation) this year, following earlier editions of the book in Dutch, German, Arabic, and English. As we know that backlash against gender equality is not only happening in the Netherlands and Korea, we hope that NGOs in the two countries will be able to share the process of collaborating with other members of the MenEngage Global Alliance to seek a joint response to effectively deal with backlash. In addition, as a new member of MenEngage, GETP hopes to promote members in Korea and create colleagues in the future. GETP and Emancipator are organizing an online meeting for MenEngage members who are looking for ways to effectively respond to the global backlash. We hope to exchange experiences, inspiration, hopes and fears with other MenEngage members and discuss ways of supporting each other in joint action or other practical ways.
